The leadership of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has said that denying the party its mandate in Kano state would lead to a crisis that would extend beyond Nigeria to other African countries.

The National Auditor of the NNPP, Ladipo Johnson, read a statement signed by the acting National Chairman of the party, Abba Kawu Ali, at the offices of the Economic Community of West African Commission (ECOWAS), European Union, American Embassy and British High Commission, on Wednesday to protest the verdicts of the Kano governorship election at the Tribunal and Appeal Court, said there are clandestine moves to truncate the will of the vast majority of the people of Kano State with respect to the Governor they elected on March 18, Abba Kabir Yusuf.

He said the atmosphere in Kano was already charged as the people already feel cheated by the 2019 general elections.

He said the party was not taking the developments with the certified true copy of the Appeal Court judgment lightly “and will do anything within the ambit of the law to take what the entire world knows is ours.

“While the NNPP has proceeded to the Supreme Court to seek redress, we are concerned with the peace and stability of Kano State in particular and Northern Nigeria, in general. We, therefore, urge the Supreme Court to embrace substantial justice by restoring the mandate of the people of Kano State and His Excellency, Abba Kabir Yusif.

“As we head towards this next level of adjudication, which of course is the final, there is palpable tension in Kano. The city’s atmosphere is enveloped in anger, with a sense of shock and agony pervading every discussion on the streets, offices and homes. To say that there is a combustible mix of provocation and betrayal welling up in the minds of the citizens of Kano is an understatement. The people are bitter, enraged, exasperated and fuming with fury. The security situation today in Kano State has become unprecedented,” he said.

“We hasten to put it on record this moment for global leaders that this is an ill-advised move which consequences will reverberate not only in Nigeria, but also in Africa and the whole world. The deliberate hijack of a people’s mandate in Kano will no doubt have consequences politically, economically, and socially especially in light of its humanitarian repercussions.”

The party also called on concerned stakeholders including but not limited to the Vice President, Kashim Shettima, Northern Governors Forum, Northern Senators Forum, Northern House of Representatives Forum, Northern Conference of Speakers, Northern Elders Forum, Northern Christian Association, and the Council of Ulamas from the 19 Northern States, to also draw the attention of the President and the Supreme Court to ensure substantial justice is delivered to NNPP and the Kano people.

The Ondo State House of Assembly has warned against violating the resolutions of President Bola Tinubu’s meeting with the members of the House and other stakeholders over the lingering political crisis in the state.

The House held its first plenary session on Tuesday after last Friday’s meeting with Tinubu in Abuja.

At the end of Tuesday’s plenary, the Speaker of the Assembly, Mr Olamide Oladiji, disclosed that, as part of the resolutions reached at the meeting with Tinubu, the deputy governor, Mr Lucky Aiyedatiwa, was asked to write an undated resignation letter and submit it to the President.

The Speaker said the President appointed him (Speaker), the Secretary of the Ondo State Government, Mrs Oladunni Odu, and the state Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Ade Adetimehin, to monitor compliance with the resolutions.

Oladiji, who read the resolutions on the floor of the House, warned all the gladiators and stakeholders against violating the resolutions of the meeting.

The Speaker said, “For the avoidance of doubt, let me present to the good people of Ondo State, the resolutions reached after the meeting of representatives of the Ondo State House of Assembly, the State Executive Council members, members of the National Assembly from Ondo State and the state Chairman of the All Progressives Congress with His Excellency, the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the leadership of our great part, that all parties shall embrace peace, that status quo be maintained by all parties, that all impeachment proceedings be terminated forthwith, and all court cases withdrawn by all parties.”

Reading further, he said the resolutions also included “that there will be no dissolution of the State Executive Council, that an undated letter of resignation must be written and signed by the deputy governor and submitted to the President, that the party leadership and structures remained intact, that the House of Assembly leadership remained intact and that Hon. Lucky Aiyedatiwa continues to perform the functions of office as deputy governor.”

The speaker noted that the lawmakers were acting based on the mandate given to them by their constituents.

“We, as elected representatives of the people, have only acted within the precinct of the mandate freely given to us by our constituents. We have demonstrated courage when the occasion demanded it. We asked questions when there was cause for us, to do,” the Speaker stated.

During the plenary session, 51 members of the Interim Caretaker Committee for the 18 local government areas of the state as well as the Local Council Development Areas, who had been screened by the Assembly, were approved, following the request of the Governor Rotimi Akeredolu.

The PUNCH reports that there was a heavy presence of security operatives around the Assembly complex while the Tuesday session lasted.

All efforts to reach the deputy governor on the telephone were not successful as his phone line indicated busy while the text message sent to him was not replied to at the time of filing this report.

But one of his political associates, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said Aiyedatiwa was not pleased with the decision of the Assembly as it was against the resolution reached at Friday’s meeting

“ You can see that the deputy governor was not in the state yet. He is waiting for the House to declare him the acting governor before coming. But I don’t know what will happen next on the matter because the House has not kept its own part of the ‘deal’.

“The status quo they are talking about is for the deputy governor to be acting as the governor and that is what I expected the speaker to read today but he didn’t put that in his speech. Let’s see what happens next.”

Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State has described the issues between himself and his predecessor, Ibikunle Amosun, as ‘personal.’

Abiodun stated this in an interview on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics.

The governor noted that reconciliation between himself and Amosun is a private affair and may not significantly impact the socioeconomic development of Ogun State or the country as a whole.

Asked whether he has been able to reconcile with the former governor, Abiodun said, “The issue of reconciliation, I believe those are issues that are personal issues.”

“I am not sure whether a reconciliation between me and my predecessor has anything to do with the socioeconomic development of Ogun State or this country at large.”

Recall Amosun served as Ogun State governor from 2011 to 2019 after which Abiodun assumed office in 2019.

The duo have been embroiled in a long-running political feud, operating from different support camps in the state.

Despite his APC membership, Amosun supported the candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Biyi Otegbeye, in the March 2023 election, where Abiodun secured re-election.
