Ogun State local government chairman, Wale Adedayo, vows to challenge his suspension by councillors over allegations of maladministration

Seven councillors suspend Adedayo for three months, alleging financial mismanagement and direct him to hand over council property to the Vice Chairman

Wale Adedayo, the embattled Chairman of Ogun State’s Ijebu East Local Government Area, has described his suspension by councillors as a charade and vowed to challenge them democratically.

Adedayo, who accused Governor Dapo Abiodun of diverting council allocations, was suspended for three months by seven councillors.

On Thursday, the seven councillors stated that the Legislative Council had received various allegations that needed investigation and directed Adedayo to appear at its next meeting on Thursday, September 14, 2023.

They made 15 allegations against the chairman, including maladministration and financial mismanagement.

Fasheyi Akindele Adesuji, Leader of the House, Bolutife Osunfisan, Deputy Leader, Kemi Aliu, Adeniyi Adenuga, Abass Sidikat, Biyi Oguntubo, and Rotimi Olubode Williams are the seven councillors.

They agreed that “the Chairman should step aside to allow for the proper conduct of investigations.”

The Council Chairman, Hon. Wale Adedayo, is hereby suspended for three months pending the conclusion of the investigations and therefore directed to handover all the properties of the council in his possession to the Vice Chairman, who will act as the Chairman during the suspension of the Chairman as provided in the 1999 Constitution of Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended).

The Council Chairman is directed to appear before the House on the next sitting of the House on Thursday, September 14, 2023.

That the Council Treasurer, through the Head of the Local Government Administration (HOLGA) should furnish the financial/bank statement of the council in the last two years, along with other relevant documents and vouchers as the House may require in order to aid investigations.

That the above resolutions be copied to the Governor of Ogun State and the Ogun State House of Assembly. The sitting is hereby adjourned to Thursday, September 14, 2023.

Reacting to the suspension, Adedayo said;

Suspension or impeachment of a local government chairman ought to follow due process. The first stage is a letter to me about the so-called infractions.

Of course, they stormed the council secretariat with more than 100 armed policemen this morning along with thugs and agberos. They thought we were going to react violently as they had prepared. We are in a democracy. We’ll challenge them democratically.

All the allegations are baseless and without foundation. They forcefully marched the Clerk of the House to Abeokuta yesterday (Wednesday) along with the local government’s HOLGA. So, we knew what the Governor was up to before the charade of this morning.

Two of the councillors were led to the council at gunpoint. And immediately after they finished, all of them were taken in a vehicle to Abeokuta. Of course, I was told that N1m was given to each person that signed. We are not bothered. Once the EFCC comes, the books of the local government can also be opened for them to see

Football is coming home! UK & Republic of Ireland set to host Euro 2028 as Turkey withdraw bid

The United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland look set to host Euro 2028 after the Turkish FA withdrew its bid to host the tournament.

The Turkish FA has officially withdrawn its bid to host Euro 2028 in order to focus on its plan to co-host the tournament with Italy in 2032. UEFA has now approved the joint proposal, which was first announced in July.

Turkey’s withdrawal from the 2028 bidding process means that the UK and Republic of Ireland’s bid will now run unopposed. Wembley Stadium hosted the semi-finals and final of the delayed 2020 European Championship, but the UK has not hosted an entire major tournament since 1996.

Both bids will require official approval at a meeting of UEFA’s executive committee on Tuesday. An official statement from UEFA read: “The presentations at that meeting will be an important part of the process which will take due consideration of the content of the bid submissions before reaching a decision.”

If approved, then Euro 2028 will be hosted in the UK and Ireland. Among the ten proposed stadiums are Wembley Stadium, Hampden Park and the Aviva Stadium in Dublin, as well as the currently unbuilt Bramley Moore Dock stadium in Liverpool and Casement Park in Belfast

Messi makes decision on when he will leave Inter Miami

Published

Lionel Messi has reportedly decided where he will end his playing career, but it won’t be in Miami or Barcelona.

Messi’s Inter Miami contract is set to expire in 2025, at which point – according to El Nacional – he will look to return to boyhood club Newell’s Old Boys in his native Argentina. There is an option for the World Cup winner to extend his deal with Miami for an extra year, but the report states that he wants to retire in his homeland.

Messi left Barcelona in 2021 after more than two decades at the club, having joined the Spanish giants from Newell’s as a 13-year-old. He snubbed a return to Camp Nou when he left Paris Saint-Germain over the summer, and it now looks like a fairy tale return to Barca is never going to happen.

Messi scored 10 goals in his first seven games for David Beckham’s Miami franchise, but he has spent the past month injured. He will play a farewell match at Barcelona at some point, even if he does not return to play for the club
