The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has said it will officially communicate to the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, its demand to conduct a fresh election in the 25 state constituencies in Rivers State following the defection of 25 members of the House of Assembly.
The decision was part of the resolution reached by the National Working Committee, NWC, of the PDP in a meeting held on Wednesday.
The NWC said it had thoroughly reviewed the state of the party in Rivers State before reaching its decision.
Debo Ologunagba, the national publicity secretary of PDP disclosed this in a press statement issued on behalf of the party on Wednesday.
Ologunagba said the NWC has directed the national legal adviser of the party to commence appropriate legal action concerning the defection of the 25 members of the House per the provisions of the constitution of the country.
According to him, PDP will take every step necessary to ensure that the votes and mandate of the people in the 25 state constituencies in Rivers State are protected and not appropriated under any circumstances whatsoever.
“The party officially demands that INEC should within the constitutionally stipulated time, conduct fresh election in the 25 state constituencies in Rivers State where vacancies now exist in the Rivers State House of Assembly as a result of the defection of the 25 now-former members,” part of the statement reads
