The Academic Staff Union of Universities(ASUU) has instructed all its members nationwide to join other Nigerian workers to fully participate in the nationwide strike that has commenced nationwide from today, Monday.

The union has also directed the branch leadership in various universities to mobilise members under their watch for compliance.

The union gave the directive in a letter dated June 2, 2024, signed by Prof Emmanuel Osodeke, its President, and addressed to all the branch chairpersons and zone coordinators.

According to the President, NLC has declared indefinite strike action starting from Monday, June 3rd, 2024 due to the failure of the government to conclude renegotiation of minimum wage for Nigerian workers and reversal of hike in electricity tariff. Our branches are hereby enjoined to join in the strike action as an affiliate members of Congress.

“Consequently, branch chairpersons are to mobilise all members to participate in the strike action.”

When Tribune contacted on the instruction, Prof Adelaja Odukoya, the Lagos Zone Coordinator of ASUU, told the media organisation on Monday that the zone would fully go by the directive of the union.

Odukoya said compliance wouldn’t be a difficult thing for all the seven universities in the zone and all other zones to comply with.
