Nuri Şahin has replaced Edin Terzić as Borussia Dortmund head coach following the latter’s surprise resignation.

Despite leading Dortmund to the 2023/24 UEFA Champions League final, Terzić stepped down on 13 June after two-and-a-half years in charge over two spells.

Şahin – a product of the BVB academy and former first-team player of over 250 appearances – is something of a ready-made replacement, though, having returned to the club in January to join Terzić’s coaching staff.

Sven Bender was also recruited as a co-assistant and will continue in the role under his ex-Dortmund teammate, who has signed a three-year deal through to 30 June 2027.

“It’s a huge honour for me to be Borussia Dortmund coach,” said Şahin. “I want to thank all the responsible parties at the club for putting their faith in me. I’m really looking forward to the challenge at BVB. From day one, I’ll give it all my energy and work with real passion to maximise out chances of success.”

Şahin’s Dortmund begin pre-season training on 10 July, with a trip to Japan part of their preparations. Die Schwarzgelben face minnows Phönix Lübeck in the DFB Cup first round on 18 August, before kicking off their pursuit of a first Bundesliga title since 2011/12 a week later. The fixture list will be released on 4 July
