Governor of Kwara State, Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq has urged the national assembly to accept the gender bill for the sake of equality in the political sphere.

Speaking on the development in a statement issued on Friday, he said that rejecting the bill does not speak well of the efforts of promoting fair representation in the political space and governance.

The statement reads: “I strongly lend my voice to appeal to the National Assembly to revisit the bills on affirmative action for women. The rejection of such progressive proposals pours cold water on the concerted efforts to have half of the human community fairly represented at the decision making table.”

“It is my hope that our lawmakers would be inspired by what we are doing in Kwara, have a rethink and help make our political system and the laws governing it truly participatory and gender friendly.”

It would be recalled that in 2021, the governor gave approval to a gender inclusion bill in Kwara, thereby making it possible to have at least 35 percent women appointees in different classes of political appointments in the state.
