Liverpool defender Joel Matip has been named the Premier League player of the month for February.

Matip, 30, played in Liverpool’s four games in February and was instrumental, helping his side to amass the maximum 12 points.

He was in the heart of defence that kept three clean sheets and conceded only one goal in the games against Leicester City, Burnley, Norwich and Leeds United.

Matip also compounded the woes of Leeds United after he scored a goal in Liverpool’s 6-0 mauling over the Whites/Peacocks.

Meanwhile, Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe won the manager of the month for February.

Howe achieved the feat after leading Newcastle to three wins and a draw in February, thereby taking his side above the relegation zone.

He also led the team to a 2-1 victory over Southampton away from home last night and currently sits 14th on the Premier League standings with 31 points.
