The Deputy Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly and Chairman House Committee on Media and Information, Augustine Okezie Meregini, has lauded his colleagues for the accelerated hearing and passage of H.A.B 11: The Abia State Governor’s and Deputy Governor’s Pensions Law Repeal Bill, 2024.

Meregini, who spoke to newsmen after the passage of the Bill, said it reflected the people’s will.

He noted that some Houses of Assembly in some States had before now taken similar steps to repeal such pensions l.

“I feel happy knowing that what we did today is a reflection of the totality of the will of Abians and Nigerians.

“Of course we know that in Nigeria, there is this clamour by the vast majority of the people to repeal the law,” he said.

The Deputy Speaker who represents Umuahia East State Constituency in the House, said Governor Alex Otti would have also been a beneficiary of the repealed law but commended him “for not interfering in the process”.

He listed some gains from the repealing of the alleged pensions to include the freeing of more funds to the state government for use in addressing the needs of the people.

Meregini said the huge funds to be saved from those alleged pensions would be better deployed in the ongoing development of Abia State
