Babatunde Olaoluwa, who allegedly had been pretending to be a worshipper only to dispossess people in churches of their phones in the Oye Ekiti and Ayegbaju areas of the state, has run out of luck.

Mr Adeniran Akinwale, the Commissioner of Police, Ekiti State Command, said the suspect was caught on Saturday evening after allegedly making away with seven phones belonging to different worshippers at Christ Apostolic Church, Ayegbaju Ekiti.

Akinwale, in a statement on Sunday by Sunday Abutu, the Police Public Relations Officer, said, “The suspect, who went to the church pretending to be one of their members, studied the worshippers and in the euphoria of praises, made away with seven phones.”

The police Czar said that “the suspect, during interrogation, confessed to having been operating around Oye Ekiti and Ayegbaju Ekiti with churches as his target.

The police commissioner said, “He further confessed to having stolen a lot of phones from the Redeemed Christian Church of God and New Reality Christian Centre, all in Oye-Ekiti.

“Investigation revealed that the suspect, after meeting his target, normally sent the stolen phones through a motor park to Lagos, where his friend assisted him in selling them and sending the proceeds back to him through online transfer.

“Meanwhile, the seven phones that he stole during his last operation at CAC, Ayegbaju Ekiti, have been recovered from him, and some of the victims of his atrocities showed up in the station and have identified the suspect and their stolen phones.”

He, however, added that “the suspect will be arraigned accordingly immediately after the conclusion of the investigation.”
